4.8-magnitude earthquake near Buan marks Korea's biggest quake of the year

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck four kilometers (2.5 miles) outside of Buan, North Jeolla Wednesday morning, the Korea Meteorological Administration announced the same day.
The epicenter of the earthquake is 35.70 degrees north latitude and 126.71 degrees east longitude, in Jingdong-ri, Haengan-myeon, Buan. The depth of the epicenter is estimated to be eight kilometers.
No casualties or damages were reported as of 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Gwangju and Jeolla fire headquarters. However, more than 70 reports were received from citizens who felt buildings shake due to the earthquake. A building in Buan was reported to have had cracks running down one side after the earthquake.
The earthquake on Wednesday is the largest that has occurred on the Korean Peninsula and surrounding area so far this year. It is also the first time in over a year that an earthquake over 4.5 magnitude has occurred near Korea, since the earthquake that struck 52 kilometers offshore of Donghae, Gangwon on May 15 last year.
