국악원 민속악단 감독 “BTS에 감사… 다음엔 무대 위에서 ‘아리랑’ 함께”

Yu Ji-suk, art director of the National Gugak Center's folk orchestra and certified instructor of seodo sori (a genre of Korean folk song that originated from the northwestern provinces), has recently added an unusual entry to her illustrious career: performing “Arirang” in front of Gwanghwamun for K-pop megaband BTS's comeback performance.

서도소리 전수자인 유지숙 국립국악원 민속악단 예술감독은 최근 화려한 경력에 이색적인 이력 하나를 더했다. 바로 K팝 슈퍼그룹 BTS의 컴백 무대를 위해 광화문 앞에서 ‘아리랑’을 공연한 것이다. 
 
“It was quite a tough project, but whether it was big or small, my team and I were able to play a role in performing 'Arirang' to the global audience, and it will be remembered as a happy memory,” the 63-year-old director said in a recent interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily.

유 감독은 최근 코리아중앙데일리와의 인터뷰에서 “매우 힘든 프로젝트였지만, 규모와 상관없이 나와 팀이 ‘아리랑’을 전 세계에 알리는 데 일조할 수 있었던 뜻깊은 무대였다”며 오래도록 행복한 기억으로 남을 것”이라고 말했다. 
 
“Gugak [Korean traditional music] is such a highly specialized and niche music genre, but the fact that it was able to be played at the symbolic Gwanghwamun Square means something.”

그는 “국악은 매우 전문적이고 다소 틈새적인 장르이지만, 그 음악이 상징적 공간인 광화문광장에서 연주됐다는 점은 큰 의미를 지닌다”고 말했다. 
 
 
Yu and her team, comprising four vocalists and eight instrumentalists, performed about a minute of “Arirang” on March 21 before some 22,000 ticket holders gathered to celebrate BTS’s comeback after nearly four years.

유 감독은 민요 소리꾼 4명, 연주자 8명으로 구성된 팀과 함께 관객 약 2만2000명 앞에서 1분여간 ‘아리랑’을 공연했다.
 
Though brief, the act required considerable effort and underwent multiple changes until the last minute.
 
짧은 공연이었지만 상당한 노력이 필요했고, 마지막 순간까지 여러 차례 수정이 이루어졌다.  
 
 
“We rehearsed walking out of [Gyeongbok Palace] when rehearsing at Kintex [an exhibition hall in Goyang], but when we actually did it, the organizer ought to have thought that it didn't deliver as well as expected. Since it was going to be livestreamed, there needed to be no accident whatsoever, so we changed at the last minute to performing standing still,” she said.

그는 “킨텍스에서 리허설할 때는 (경복궁에서) 걸어 나오는 동선까지 맞춰봤지만, 실제로 해보니 주최 측에서 기대만큼 효과가 살지 않는다고 판단한 것 같다”며 “생중계가 예정된 무대였던 만큼 어떤 사고도 있어서는 안 됐기 때문에, 마지막 순간 가만히 서서 공연하는 방식으로 변경했다”고 말했다. 
 
Toward the end of “Body to Body,” which opened the Gwanghwamun performance, the melody of “Arirang” overlapped with the song’s predominant hip-hop rhythm before taking over for about 30 seconds, which was the part responsible for by Yu's team.

광화문 공연의 오프닝곡이었던 ‘보디 투 보디’의 끝무렵, ‘아리랑’의 선율이 힙합 리듬과 겹쳐지다가 약 30초 동안 그 흐름을 이어받는데, 이 부분이 바로 유 감독 팀이 맡은 구간이었다.
 
When the part starts, the camera, which had been focused on BTS on a special stage at Gwanghwamun Square, moves back to the woldae [elevated stone walkway] area in front of Gwanghwamun, where Yu and her team were standing by.

이 부분이 시작되면 광화문광장 특설무대 위의 BTS를 비추고 있던 카메라가 광화문 앞 월대 쪽으로 이동하고, 그곳에는 유 감독의 팀이 대기하고 있었다.
 
“Now, I vaguely imagine if it might be nice next time to have an 'Arirang' vocalist perform on stage together with BTS,” she said. “If reviving gugak and Korean tradition is one of their motifs after all, then performing ‘Arirang’ on stage with a master singer of Korea’s folk songs — even if it’s not me — would be meaningful.”

유 감독은 “다음에는 BTS와 함께 무대에서 ‘아리랑’ 가수가 함께 공연하는 것도 좋지 않을까 막연히 상상해본다”고 말했다. “국악과 한국 전통을 되살리는 것이 그들의 모티브 중 하나라면, 꼭 내가 아니더라도 한국 민요 명창과 함께 무대에서 ‘아리랑’을 공연하는 것은 의미 있는 일이 될 것”이라고 말했다.
 
Q. If there are opportunities in the future to collaborate with K-pop, how would you approach it?
A. Since BTS has consistently contributed to promoting Korea’s traditional culture, I think it would be nice to share the stage with them next time. We already have the outfits. If they are making efforts to let the world know about Korea’s culture and traditions, taking it just a step further could make a significant difference for gugak. Not as a side element, but as a central part of the stage. I believe it will happen next time.

Q. K팝과 협업할 기회가 생긴다면, 어떤 방식으로 임하고 싶나. 
A. BTS가 꾸준히 한국 전통문화를 알리는 데 기여해온 만큼, 다음에는 그들과 한 무대를 함께하면 좋겠다고 생각한다. 의상도 이미 갖춰져 있다. 그들이 한국의 문화와 전통을 세계에 알리기 위해 노력하고 있는 만큼, 거기서 한 걸음만 더 나아가도 국악에는 큰 변화가 생길 수 있다. 단순한 부수적 요소가 아니라, 무대의 중심으로, 다음에는 꼭 그렇게 될 거라고 믿는다.
